A large old rug from the western Middle Atlas Mountains, featuring a complex and beautiful design that remains partly concealed beneath its wonderfully high and varied pile. These lovely old Zaiane rugs were traditionally made to be used on both sides, with the design often most clearly visible on what is considered the ‘reverse’ of the piece. Here, warm red dominates, complemented in the design by sage green, tangerine and lavender, all woven against a natural charcoal base. Entirely handwoven from pure wool, the rug has a wonderfully tactile quality, and the varying depth and variation of its pile add to its character and sense of age. There is one historic repair to the centre of the carpet, consistent with its vintage nature.
