Maroc Tribal Vintage Rugs at Home
Morocco's rural weaving culture was diverse and rich, reflecting the heritage of its communities. The rural carpets woven by Morocco's Berber peoples had a distinctive style that remained largely independent of external influences. The rugs created for personal and domestic use embodied the customs, beliefs, and cultural identity of the communities from which they originated. Their designs and weaving techniques also reflect the climate of the environments in which the weavers lived. In the cool, mountainous regions, thick, high-pile rugs provide warmth and insulation, while in the milder climates of other areas, weavers produced lower-pile, denser rugs that were better suited to the local weather conditions
While there is an enormous amount that has been—and should be—recorded and shared about this rich diversity, this short collection of beautiful images offers a glimpse into how the beauty and individuality of vintage Moroccan Berber rugs provide beautiful possibilities for a wide range of interiors and styling approaches
Creamy, thick pure wool Beni Ouarain rugs originated in the northern Middle Atlas Mountains range, where the cold winters necessitated warm sleeping mats. The large white backgrounds, picked out here and there with simple motifs or sparse lozeneg networks, could have recalled the nearby mountains, which in past decades would have been covered in snow for many months of the year
Vintage Beni Mguild rugs, like this one, feature elegant lattices of lozenges with harmonious combinations of colours, including red, charcoal, orange, green, and white
Contemporary Berber rugs can be striking and graphic, echoing the simplicity of older carpets with their minimalist and abstract forms
Moroccan rugs woven for everyday purposes in Berber homes, sometimes created in wool at other times in recycled textiles, make surprising and creative use of colour and are a wonderful way to liven the tone of a room and bring warmth to an interior
Master weavers created large, intricate, and status-bestowing rugs like this beautiful carpet from Morocco's far eastern region, where distinctive rug designs and colour palettes set the area's weaving traditions somewhat apart from those found elsewhere in the country
Older Berber rugs, like these above, carry important cultural and historical significance, especially as traditional textile production in self-sufficient rural households is increasingly being abandoned. Original and genuine Moroccan Berber rugs remain a lasting interior design investment
