This lovely old rug from the central Middle Atlas mountains is a marvellous example of Berber weaving as utilitarian art, and of the many influences that come to bear on rural craft. In the 1960, 70s, and 80s there was a brand of matches called ‘Lion’. Having seen these matches, the weaver has clearly interpreted the colours and the design in a way suitable to her upright loom. She has also woven ‘lion’ in Arabic in the piece. Woven in pure wool on a fine cotton base it is in nice condition with some pile wear and a visible restoration at one end. A collectible rug
