Rare Old Ait Seghrouchen Carpet CA636 SOLD

2,950.00

This is a rare and very old carpet from the Ait Seghrouchen tribe, dating from the 1940/50s if not earlier. Due to its age and provenance, and its fine and skilled weave, this is a highly collectable carpet.  The Ait Seghrouchen is a Berber tribe from east-central Morocco, with one tribal group living on the south side of the Middle Atlas mountains and one on the north side of the High Atlas mountains. Their carpets share some similarities with Beni Ouarain carpets, in their use of natural cream and charcoal wool and their graphic, often simple, designs. The Ait Seghrouchen weave a striking lattice of diamond or lozenge symbols, the lattice itself composed of small square or diamond motifs. Their carpets are elegant and beautiful, and are the work of skilled and thoughtful weavers, This carpet is woven in silky dark cream wool and is in wonderful condition for such an old original item, with one or two areas of good restoration. It is finished at both ends with a long fine hand plaited fringe, some of which is missing

Size : 4.45m plus two fringes of 40cm each by 2.10m

Reference : CA636
