A beautiful and diverse - and rare - mixed flatweave & low pile "hanbel" from a small Moroccan tribe whose weavings are unlike those found elsewhere in the country.
Living in an isolated area that was unknown to the carpet world until 1997 - in the foothills on the eastern slopes of the High Atlas Mountains - the women who wove used bold colors in striking motifs, combining pile on soft flatweaves. Many of their designs and techniques have not been identified elsewhere in Morocco.
This is an old, original piece, now beautifully sun-softened.
